| FEATURED ARTIST: RONIT SHAPOW Artist Relations spoke with Head makeup artist, Ronit Shapow who’s worked on videos for international celebrities from Deepak Chopra to the Black Eyed Peas. How long have your worked in the industry? Since 1998 How did you get started as a makeup artist? I started my career unknowingly at a makeup counter while going through graduate school. It was at the counter that I got the best artistry training. I got ample opportunity to work with all skin colors, textures, and skin problems, while getting product knowledge without the pressures of working onset. When I got offered a makeup job on a movie I was so excited I couldn’t eat or sleep for a week. It was then that I moved to Los Angeles and enrolled in classes at Makeup Designory. After graduating I continued freelancing for makeup companies until my freelance career took over. Have you had to design any outrageous or challenging looks for any of your clients? I got to do more outrageous looks early in my career. I worked on a video with Deepak Choprah where I had to make actors look like Elvis and Albert Einstein to name a few. I had to completely change skin colors, face features, and creatively fit some last minute wigs—all without an assistant and within a small frame of time. However, in the past few years my career has gone more in the beauty direction. What can you tell us about your most current project with the Black Eyed Peas? The new Black Eyed Peas look is very futuristic with a twist of Mad Max. The clothes have very clean lines, with use of blacks and grays. To compliment this look we are going to keep Fergie’s makeup clean with a strong black lash line. What is most important to you about makeup the makeup looks you design? What is most important to me about makeup design is balance and skin. For instance, if we decide to focus on eyes, I soften up the cheek and lip. If we focus on lips, I soften the eye. If the focus is glowing skin, I keep the glow in certain areas so it doesn’t appear too shiny. Every makeup application starts with a lot of skincare. I stress hydration, exfoliation and circulation. What is the difference between doing makeup on tour as opposed to makeup for photo shoots? The main difference between doing makeup on tour and photo shoots is intensity. Performance makeup has to have staying power, demanding a heavy setting of powder, but allowing for a more intense makeup look. Makeup for photo shoots can be more subtle, with less emphasis on a bullet-proof application. Photographers have more control over the image with lighting and angle, and there is more opportunity to run in and retouch the makeup. Where do you find inspiration? Everywhere!!! The pastel cookies in bakeries in Paris The fish in the Bahamas The sunset in Malta The architecture in Italy The simplicity of design and textures in Japan And my favorite….. the flowers and butterflies in my backyard. Which makeup artists do you admire? I admire the work of Jeanine Lobell, Joanna Schipp, Kevin Aucoin, Pat Mcgrath, and Gucci Westman.
